Awakening: The Dreamless Castle
Guide the Princess through her journey as she seeks to uncover the truth about herself.
Solve mini games and Hidden Objects puzzles to find clues and tools to move the narrative forward.
Be treated to beautifully drawn backgrounds and clear graphics when you play the game.
Awakening: The Dreamless Castle is, at its core, a retelling of the story of the Sleeping Beauty. In this incarnation, the Princess has spent some years sleeping and, when she woke up, she would need to find out what happened during the years that she was dormant. However, things have changed drastically in her world – she is the only human in a Kingdom that was now ruled by both friendly and hostile Goblins, whom she must deal with on her way to uncovering her past.
The storywriters of the game definitely took plenty of time to think about the story. Except for the introduction, you will not recognize the game’s storyline as a rehash of the Sleeping Beauty tale. The narrator is, of course, the Fairy Godmother who watched over her and will seek to guide her in her new journey. You also have a fairy companion, who basically is the one who will be giving you hints during Hidden Object and mini-game puzzles.
Hints are worth noting early in this review. They are great tools that you’ll need to move through the levels faster, but you’ll also find that each area in the game has puzzles that are quite intuitive. There are clues that you will find along the way, and you can access those clues using the book icon on the lower left part of the screen. Hints should come as a last resort – it will drain your fairy’s energy and she will need to recharge in order to give you Hints again.
The game playfully takes a literal approach to recharging: when you use the Hint, the Fairy will sit down until the gauge recharges. That’s when she stands up, literally informing you that she’s back and ready to give Hints.
You’ll also love the quality of the graphics in Awakening: The Dreamless Castle. The character portraits, especially the portrait of the main character, are beautifully hand drawn and look very realistic. The backgrounds are rendered beautifully as well – they look like paintings that have been blended into the background of the game.
There is also a mini-game titled “Goblinjong,” which will be unlocked once you have played through the entire game. It makes a debut at some point in the early parts of the game – it’s basically Mahjong that was supposedly created by a Goblin within the game’s universe. If you’re getting tired of playing the game’s Hidden Object puzzles, you can exit and play Goblinjong instead. It’s a neat diversion, so to speak.
To summarize, Awakening: The Dreamless Castle is a great way for you to relive the story of the Sleeping Beauty using the game mechanics of Hidden Objects adventure. It gives you a different experience with its challenging gameplay and puzzles, and its wonderful graphics that you will certainly appreciate.
The game is free to try for 60 minutes when you download through the Big Fish Game Manager. You’ll have to buy the full version afterwards, but it’s a great decision you can make. Awakening: The Dreamless Castle Summary
