Are you willing to fight the supernatural to help a friend? Donna Brave: The Deathly Tree is a test of friendship filled with challenges such as puzzles and hidden objects.

In the game, you’re Donna, who answers the call for help from her best friend. But you don’t really know what’s in store for you. All you have is the flower, some directions on how to help your friend from dying, and the will to save her.

Saving a friend isn’t easy, but the game makes it more bearable with a lot of helpful tools. These include hints and the ability to skip the puzzles. You will also receive a list of objectives to serve as your guide. In any scene, you can pick up objects, which will come in handy.

But it’s not an adventure without challenges. The game focuses on hidden objects, with various game modes. You can match the outlined images below with the objects you see. At certain times, you need to perform a specific action before you can find and select the matched object. There are also mini-games throughout Donna Brave.

The mini-games are actually easy when compared to those of other Collector’s Edition games. The problem lies in the hidden-object games since they tend to be more difficult. There’s also something missing in this game, which you can see in other Collector’s Editions: the shimmer.

The shimmer is helpful to give you an idea which part of the scene you have to focus on. This one doesn’t. The only time you know that you can interact with the scene is if you hover your cursor around it. Then you’ll see a magnifying glass.

The game thus can be overwhelming for the first-time players. There’s the feeling of not knowing where to begin. It doesn’t help that you need to move from one scene to another throughout the game. It can feel exhausting. You’ll also end up using hints more often than you should.

The upside is you have more control over the gameplay. There are different game modes for you to choose from. Naming them according to different stages of a plant’s growth is a nice touch. It keeps up with the theme of the game.

A common ground among Collector’s Edition games is its great graphics and animation. This one gives you a sense of nostalgia: while the animations are good, they remind you of the 90s cartoons. The way the characters interact seems superficial, which somehow reduces the sincerity of the game. The sound is okay. The game is supposed to be a thriller and mystery, but you don’t feel these much.

Donna Brave: Deathly Tree is not the most compelling mystery or hidden-object adventure you can download from Big Fish. But it still deserves some attention. The mini-games are good and easy enough, unlike other HO games. You also have the option to play them over and over in the Extra section of the game. If you love the 90s animation, you will also enjoy the same here. Donna Brave: The Deathly Tree Collector's Edition Summary
